The pioneer Jews of San Francisco arrived from Germany during the Gold Rush and were instrumental in building the city. The roles they were relegated to in the Old World -- peddler and petty merchant -- were highly valued in the Gold Rush. The openness of Gold Rush California allowed these Jews to assimilate far more and have a greater impact on the building and defining of a major city than any other Jewish community in America. But this acceptance came at a price -- assimilation put this community in danger of losing its Jewish identity.

The San Francisco Diggers was a radical community-action group of activists and Improvisational actors operating from 1967 to 1968, based in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco.

Longshoreman Johnny Barnes is in love with Kitty Tracy, barmaid at her father's waterfront saloon, and he beats up Cassidy, a crooked politician who has been annoying her. Cassidy is murdered that night and Johnny is jailed for the crime. Kitty, her father Andy Tracy, and waterfront-priest Father Cameron believe Johnny is innocent but all evidence points to his guilt.

This pilot for the TV series stars Pernell Roberts as Jim Conrad, who runs an airport, much to the chagrin of his boss, "his way." In this, two plots run - a kid whose parents are splitting up decides to take off in a little red prop plane (and Conrad talks him down), and thieves played by the handsome Tab Hunter and his truly ugly sidekicks try to steal a money shipment. Roberts was replaced by Lloyd Bridges when the show went to series.
